Manna from Heaven

This story was submitted to the Peoples’ War site by a volunteer on behalf of

I was about 15 years old. I used to cycle home to Clapham Common, when I heard the unmistakable sound of a doodlebug bomb. I was afraid and fell off my bike and lay low, thinking I could run to a shelter.

I didn’t make it to my shelter. The bomb had landed in an allotment and there were vegetables over the place. I filled my saddlebag with potatoes, carrots, whatever I could get hold of, all free. I took it home to my mother who was very pleased.
