I was in the Western Desert in Egypt with the Royal Engineers. This is my short story about an S.A.S officer and a few of his men with their jeeps. They came into our camp one afternoon, one of the jeeps was knocking like mad - the big end. I heard it when they came in and the Officer in Charge asked my officer it there was a good fitter in camp. So he then asked could anything be done, so I said I knew where there was a jeep which had a wheel blown off. We had passed this courtyard and if I could go back 2 or 3 miles with another fitter and a sapper to check for booby traps which he did. Between us we took the end out and took it back to our camp. In the meantime all the men and officers had a meal and drink, then got down to get some sleep. Meanwhile we took the engine out and put the engine we had salvaged back into their jeep.
When they got up next day, I said to my officer "Has he done anything to his vehicle?" He said "Go and try it." It was running perfectly! The Officer said "What's he done?" I said he's put another engine in for you." He said with surprise "Where's he got another engine from in the middle of the desert?"
