I was 12 years old at the time 1942
I had 4 sisters ,Eileen,Peg,Win and Joan who were married and live nearby . I also
had a brother Ken who was in the Navy.
One Sunday evening,my Mun ANNIE and my
Dad Ted had been in the Anderson shelter
most of the day due to an air raid.
My Mum and Dad decided we should go back
in the house for cup of tea which we were
drinking when there was a loud thump and
the ground shuddered and all the lights
went out.We always kept a supply of candles
ready to light in an emergency.
A little later there was a knock on the
front door ,it was an A.R.P Warden my,Dad
was in the Home Guard, the Warden said
come and see this big hole just across the
road I remember looking down this hole
and seeing smoke coming from it.We all
went back to our homes and the next thing
I remember a team from U.X.B (Unexploded
Bombs)unit arrived and told my Dad to open
all the windows because they were going
to blow the fuse. My Dad couldn't open
the window as it was stuck so he tried
to force the frame with his foot and the
window broke.
The next day people were walking past our
house and saying look that window was
broken with the bomb damage..!
We were very lucky as that bomb could
have exploded st any time
