I lived in rural Derbyshire when I was a lad and my father was a builder. We lived on the flight path to the steel works at Sheffield. I remember one night at around 10 or 11 the sirens went off and I had to go off on my bike to get my father. I cycled along a country road through open countryside. As I cycled along a German bomber flew very low overhead. As it passed me the gunner in the rear turret swivelled around with his guns to point at me. When he saw it was a child he waved to me instead . I will never forget that as long as I live.
Another memory I have is when a cousin of mine, who was in the Merchant Navy, came home on leave. He brought with him an orange and coconut. We all went round to his mother鈥檚 house to look at them lying on the table.
