"This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Gloucester on behalf of John, June and their Mother from Yate, Bristol and has been added to the site with their permission. They fully understand the site's terms and conditions".
On the 2nd September 1939, my Mother took my Brother and I to Ireland, as our Father, who was in the Royal Navy, wanted us to be safe in my Mother's old home. When the Battle of Britain had ended, and my Father, because of his age, would not be going to sea again, we (the family) returned to Endland. I, always remember, when boarding the ship for our return journey, seeing the crew taking machine guns to the superstructure, and we were all issued with life jackets. As, a soon to be 11 year old, I was very frightened, but thank God we had a safe journey, even staying in London. before our eventual arrival home in the Medway towns.
