I remember in 1939 or 1940 I was sitting at home, and it was pitch black outside. We heard a plane flying low overhead. Then came the sound of it crashing. We stayed in the new Timber Houses in Alloway Terrace and the plane must have come down very close to where we stayed.
Because we were children we were not allowed out to go and see what had happened, but my father (Joe Boath) went running out the house to investigate.
When he came back he had, wrapped up in his jacket, a large chunk of metal from the downed German fighter which come down out towards the Kingsway. It was still glowig red hot from the crash, it was so hot none of us could touch it with our bear hands.
I have no idea how my dad managed to get it all the way back to our house!
The piece was in our house for many years afterwards, but after I moved away I lost track of where it went. I now have no idea where it is today.
