My cousin: John Ross, was on reconnaissance and was one of the first pilots I think to be shot down. He was from a Wallasey family and was shot, flying over a damn. He always said that he didn鈥檛 want to bomb women or children. His brother: Donald, was decorated by the French for work behind enemy lines, he eventually lost his sight. During the war, the family moved to London and father Harold who had a leather furniture business and often dealt with many German customers who became friends, was shocked to think that the English may be bombing friends. Father had served in the First World War and was left partially invalided, but he still served as a warden; telling people to turn out their lights. One warden told people to put out their lights and then went onto fall over their rockery. Father went to town where the bombing was extremely bad; the people were so brave. They were all concerned about a bomb that might explode, two brave wardens hoisted it onto their shoulders and took it to the police station; a terrified sergeant ordered them to put it down Everyone left the building.
My mother was in based in Littlewoods, where they housed the censorship offices. She later went to work in the food office and the tobacco warehouse; where they sent the affects of American soldiers that had died in order to dispatch them to their families. The warehouse was the largest in the world and when a Sergeant was sent to inspect it he had to drive around in a jeep.
