In 1943 I did pre-training for the RAF with ATC. They did a gliding course where you would learn to fly a glider. There were 5 bar gates and we were supposed to do short hops up to about 20/30 ft off the ground. My last hop was the end of the day performance and somebody had miscounted thinking there was a WW1 pilot instructor. The first I knew it was about it I was 150 ft in the air and to make matters worse we had a white art of snow and hail and I couldn鈥檛 see the ground. But I was lucky enough to get down safely. Suffice to say, I went into the army and not the RAF!
