I lived in Highfield Street in Coalville. My husband worked for the council and was also a fireman.

On the night Coalville was bombed my husband pushed me under the bed for protection — I was expecting at the time and my son never did like the floor when he was born!!

I was married in 1940 during the war.
My wedding dress was made of white velvet with six bridesmaids in mauve and was made into my dress by a neighbour.
We were married in Hugglescote Church at Easter. There were 21 weddings that day.
I worked in Leicester and visited my mum who lived in Clarendon Park. She had evacuees from Yarmouth.

My workplace was cordoned off and I had to go home due to bombing in Leicester.

This story was told to Pam McGowan and submitted to the People's War Website by Lisa Reeves of CSV Action Desk Leicester on behalf of Laura Starkey and has been added with her permission.
