I was training in Kimnel Park and one night a lot of people were out on manoeuvres. I heard a crackling, and originally thought it was rain but soon realised it was fire. I could not get out and had to be rescued by soldiers — which was embarrassing as I was in my pyjamas! The whole barracks went up, and we lost everything. It had been started by an iron. The only thing that was replaced was our uniform. It was the most eventful moment during the war for me. I lost my engagement ring, which was sad, but I didn’t much like the chap anyway!
