I have a memory from before I was two years old.
We had all gone to Maidstone West railway stationthat day, my mother and father,my brother and sister. It was 1940 and people thought that we would be invaded by Germany as so much of Europe had already fallen to Hitler's armies. Maidstone is only about 60 miles from Calais.
A lot of parents decided to evacuate their children to America or Canada where they would be safe.So we said goodbye to my six year old brother and eight year old sister at the station on the start of their journey to Canada. My parents did not know if they would ever see them again. I was, of course, too young to go with them.
The other side of the road from the station, at the bottom of Rocky Hill, was a shop that sold ice cream. All I can remember is being in a pushchair clutching what seemed to be an enormous icecream cornet. My parents decided to walk home to our hose about a mile away pushing me in the chair.
