In 1939 I was 15 and I was on holiday at Studhill in Herne Bay when war broke out. I was there with the Childrens Country Holiday Fund when we were all called together and told war had been declared. My father came to collect me and take me home to Hassocks where I was given a gas mask. I was then evacuated to Danny Farm near Hurstpierpoint where I spent about 6 weeks. My father had a trouser making factory and came to collect me so I could work in the workshop as all his staff had been evacuated. When I was old enough I wanted to join the forces but I was deffered because the work I was doing was necessary for the war effort. During the air raids I would run across the road and hide in my friend's coal cellar. I met my husband in July 1943 at a dance. He was called up in September 1943 and he came back in 1946, so we married in 1947.
I managed my father's factory until it closed in 1951.
