I was a teacher. At the outbreak of the war, I was evacuated to Gattonside, near Melrose. I stayed there for three weeks. A lot of the children went home when nothing happened. In January 1940 I was evacuated with Stockbridge School to Glenlivet, Banffshire. I stayed there for six months. Before I went to Glenlivet I had to find out where it was. I had never heard of it! It is famous for its Whisky production. I went back home after six months because all the children from Edinburgh had returned. Some years ago I went back up to Glenlivet and I met lots of people I had seen 40 years before. They did not remember me but I remembered them.
Back home I became an Air Raid Precautions (ARP) Warden with my little tin hat. I used to watch the German Planes going to Glasgow, which was badly bombed.
I also served in a canteen in Princes Street. A lot of the men that came in wore pale blue uniform, which signified that they had been wounded. My friend and I used to treat them to their meal as we felt that they had done more than enough in contributing to the war effort.
Also I did fire watching through the night in Cannonmills School where I was a teacher.
I got married in April 1945 to a soldier, who was also a teacher in 鈥渃ivvy street鈥.
