I was born in 1941 - I was already working in an engineering office - Rotherams and Sons and was living at home. My mother was deaf and she worked at the aerodrome. My father had died before war broke out. I had one younger brother who was still at school.
When he was old enough he joined the RAF and went to Canada for 6 months but when he was just trained war has ended.
We lived on an estate and has an Anderson Shelter in the back garden.
During the worst of the bombing we used to use the communal shelter on Whitley Common.
There was an anti-aircraft gun near-by which was used. The Barrage Balloons came quite close.
After November, there was no water or gas on our estate. though, only an incendiary bomb fell in our garden.
My aunt lived on the other side of the city with all the amenities so we went to live with her until our water supply came back on.
