My father worked as a farm labourer a reserved occupation, there was a prisoner of war camp near the village (clapham) some of the German prisoners were sent out to dig ditches. My father was in charge. At lunchtime they used to boil up pig potatoes and being with my father I used to sit and join them for lunch, to me they were just ordinary men and I became aware later they were missing their children and made a fuss of me spending time making me toys, for example a monkey that jumped when you squeezed the wooden frame together and chickens that pecked when you moved the ball underneath.
One i remembered called Hans which I thought at the time was a strange name!
