Good food
I was five when war broke out and had just started school. I remember the first time I had to go into the air raid shelter, for a youngster it was a bit of a game. I was fed really well during the war my mother kept rabbits in our back yard. She wouldn鈥檛 slaughter them herself but used to get the local butcher to do it. We always had a good supply of rabbit stew to supplement the rations we had. I also remember having lost of semolina, lots of semolina and also rice. No oranges or bananas but we had blackberries in the garden so we had a lot of blackberry and apple pies. My mum used to send pies to my step-brother who was in the Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs), she sent him parcels with pies, chocolates and cigarettes when he was in Britain.

I was evacuated for 1 month and went to Blythebridge in Staffordshire, but then my dad came to get me back. My Mother and Father were Fire Wardens during the war.

The last time I saw my brother
I was the last one in the family to see my brother alive. In July 1942 he went back after embarkation leave. I remember him walking down our street with his rifle. He was killed in Tunisia. We got a letter from him that he鈥檇 written the day before he died. He鈥檇 been married for less than a year and had a young baby. His wife never remarried

Palmers Green station
We were really lucky and didn鈥檛 have any direct bomb damage. We had lots of relatives who came to stay with us when they鈥檇 been bombed out of their homes. I remember in October 1944 I was playing in the street then all of a sudden there was an almighty flash in the sky and a bang a V2 Rocket had fallen on Palmers Green station

For me it wasn鈥檛 really a frightening time, now I鈥檓 older I wonder how my parents coped with it all.
