I was 9 when it started. We lived at Morse Road. I remember going to Whitehall School gas mask over my shoulder. We were all singing in the air raid shelter in Gordon Road.

On 25th November 1940 there was a real blitz on Bristol. Everything was blown up on Church Road. As soon as the all clear went we ran out of the house collecting shrapnel from the gutters. I was 9 and my brother was 13 and we wanted it because it was souvenirs and shiny. We ran to Edward street… Then suddenly the sirens went again . I looked up. You could see the pilots faces. we were being machine gunned. They could see us because it was all lit up with the blitz and the fires. We ran home fast and Dad caught us up and pushed us into the house.

It was quite fun sometimes during the war and people were friendly. You could leave the doors open. The food was much better then.
