I recall a story related to me by a member of my family. A group of evacuees from London arrived, unannounced, at Bodmin station. As their accommodation wasn't ready, it was decided that a field trip to Bodmin Beacon would be organised. The teacher on the trip was my relative. She recalls that a skylark was singing high up in the tree. Suddenly, one of the children tugged on her sleeve and said, "Excuse me, Miss. There's a bleedin' sparrow up in that tree. He's up so high, he can't get down!"
