My grandparents bought a house in Cranbrook Road, Bexleyheath in 1939 just before the war started. Grandpa lost an eye when he was three so was not called up to fight. He was a driver by trade having learned to drive on a Model T Ford. He drove for the Royal Arsenal Cooperative Society picking up milk from the depot in Mitcham and delivering to shops and depots in South London, Woolwich, Bexleyheath and the surrounding areas. It must have been hard for him to drive the big lorries with only one eye in the wartime with no lighting but he managed well. One thing he told me was that he and his mate were driving during a raid one night when they heard a dull thud, when they looked round the whole trailer full of milk crates had disappeared, it had been blown away by the blast of a nearby bomb, thay couldn't believe that they had escaped unhurt with the cab intact but somehow they had and they wondered how to explain the loss of the trailer and it's load to the boss!!
