\Father a Signalman under suspension while mother had been a domestic. youngest of six. Family splits up and mum goes to Doncaster area with four not working.

Because it was a time of slump and Chris was still a schoolboy, he couldn't find a regular place to sleep. Eventually, he decides to cycle 90 miles to his dad but gets a puncture after five. His new plan was to save the bus-fare which, with sheer determination he did. A sister, who had previously worked on finace at a store, was in the area when he moved. because an Italian had been interned during the war, she ran his business, including the Cafe, so her brother did alrgight for meals. Got a job as a butchery delivery boy and every time he had his half day he cycled to a Transport firm, miles away to seek work but his age frustrated his efforts. After a while, the boss noticed him and said "you really want to work here dont you" and set him on pottering around.
One day, a drivers mate failed to turn up so, although under age the driver took Chris.
From then on he never looked back. He had a wage - digs with a Miner's wife and a financisal arrangement with her. some weeks he wouod be away all week but he sill gave her half board. His job paid extra for being away so he was able to save. Chaps kept being called up but the job was becoming increasingly suitable to the youngster but his call up came at 1944's year end!
