At the base if you were not doing any other duties, we would go to the Company Office and have a look at the Casualty List, which was by then coming in pretty fast. It made you think by looking at the list and seeing some of your mates being killed or wounded, it could have been myself on that list. I can honestly say that nearly every person is frightened, one way or another, when going to face the enemy. I myself have been scared a few times, which I think is natural for any person in that position: but when you see your own mate being killed , you have to just forget about it and carry on and concentrate on what you are doing, if not the enemy will get you instead.
