In 1940 my sister, her friend, my brother and I were evacuated from Nelson Street School, in Manchester, to Macclesfield. My sister and her friend knew we were being evacuated, but as my twin brother and I were only four at the time we didn't know what was happening and were very frightened.
We were taken on a bus to Macclesfield. When we arrived there, three busloads of evacuees were put into a a corrugated hut. The residents of Macclesfield would come to see which evacuees they would like to accept into their homes. We were a bit like cattle.
Everybody was chosen except for us four. We were all crying and had our arms around each other, as we didn't want to be seperated, but nobody wanted all four of us.
At the end of the day they put us all into a car. We were taken around the streets and someone shouted through a megaphone "Would anyone like to take these kids?" I remember one lady coming to the door and she was puzzled. When she heard what the problem was she just shook her head. In the end a place was found for all for us.
