Silk stockings were hard to come by and before the Americans arrived with nylon stockings, girls painted their legs with gravy browning and drew a black line down their leg with a pencil to look like a seam. Of course, once the 鈥淵anks鈥 arrived (Overpaid 鈥 even scared and over here) we were able to come by nylon stockings 鈥 which had wonderful strength and hardly seemed to ladder at all. One wonders what favours had been given to acquire them, but I was only a school girl in hand knitted socks, so the matter did not arise
