I was a nine year old boy and living in Hungary, in a small country village of Kocs. Since Hungary was on the side of Germany we had been told some terrible stories about the Russians. One day, we were hiding in the cellar and I can still remember my mother saying 'the Russians are here', my heart missed a few beats. Three of them came down and started to rape the females, one of them came over to me and pushed a pistol to my forehead to shut me up, he then took the covers off me, realising I was the wrong sex he left me alone.
My friend's father was ordered by the Russians to help dig mass graves for Russian casualties and a separate one for high ranking officers. One of the Russians liked the look of my friend's father's boots, the following morning we found him shot dead with his boots missing. We made complaints to the Russian officer but could not find the guilty one. They were in a hurry to pull out so they buried their officer in the mass grave. The separate gravem which my friend's father had dug, was left empty so we buried him in it. The poor man had dug his own grave.
Later in the war I remember being up in the churchyard and watching the Russians escorting the Hungarian prisoners back to Russia, our neighbours father was among them. We threw down some food for them, they were tired and hungry. We all prayed for their safe return, but to this day they never came home.
