My work in the war
I was in a maintenance unit and when an aircraft crashed (usually a british plane) we would have to go to the crash site to dismantle the aircrafts and put the bits on long trailer lorries called Queen Marys. I was the driver of the truck carrying workers to the site.
We would take the bits back to our site and the metal was recycled and used again. Aircrafts were crashing in hop fields in Kent Sevenoaks.
Meeting my husband
I met my husband when he came to RAF Sundridge after returning from Karachi, India where he had been working in the RAF since 1938. He was a black smith and metal worker.
Whilst I was on a convoy the lorry ahead of me rolled back into mine damaging the vehicle badly. I had to drive it to the body repairers where I met my husband George who was now working there. We got engaged after a week and married within 3 months.
I was 23 and George 25.
Running for cover
I remember being on parade at 8am one morning when we saw a doodle bug (flying bomb) overhead. The WAAF sergeant told us all to lie down flat on our faces as we had been trained to do but I was so frightened I just ran away as fast as I could and jumped into a dry ditch. I hope no-one saw me! The bomb landed in a field and no-one was hurt that time.
