I lived in Bethnal Green. From the age of 14 I worked in a Stockbroker’s office in the city. At night we used to go down into the underground for safety from the bombing. The escalators did not work — we just walked down the stairs.
One night there were a lot of people going down. Someone panicked and said that there had been bombing. This led to a stampede. Lots of people were killed. No-one really knew what had happened except you could just see clothes and shoes lying around. There had in fact been no bombing that night. The incident was not talked about afterwards and it seemed that very few people knew about it.
