I lived in James Street. Vaughan Street and Highfield Street area of Coalville.
I looked after two Jewish boys who were evacuated from Birmingham because Birmingham was being bombed.
The boys came down one morning all dressed up and I didn't understand that Saturday was a special day for Jewish people and this was the reason they had dressed themselves in their best clothes and thinking they were going out to play like my own children I sent them back upstairs to change.
It was only when the Rabbi from Birmingham came to visit and explained that Saturday was the Sabbath Day and this is why they were dressed in their 'Sunday best'.
I felt very embarassed and they went back upstairs and changed again.
The boys names were Maurice and Alan.
The allowance from the Government for looking after the boys was 11 shillings per week each and Maurice's father came every week to see the boys and I always put on a salmon tea.
