This story was submitted to the People's War site by Louise Angell of the CSV Action desk at 大象传媒 Radio Derby, on behalf of Jane Thompson. The author fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
My husband was a sheet metal worker, a reserved occupation, so he didn't get called up. He did volunteer but was refused. One night we were sitting in the car. A huge thunderstorm started and all the barrage balloons across the city came undone. On another night we were in the cinema in Chaddesden, Derby and a bomb dropped on Chaddesden Park. It made a very loud noise and everyone ran for the door.
We had to choose between having a wall built outside the front door for protection, and a large metal table. We chose the table and slept under it every night - me, my husband and our two children.
