I was 6 years old when war broke out and I was living on Station Road in West Hallam with my 11 year old sister and my mother and father, also my .grandparents and Aunty. My dad was an electrician working at Stavely pit and was a 'fire watcher' at night. My sister and I were asleep in bed one night when we were woken by a whistling noise and sat upright. We realised it was a bomb which had landed in a nearby field. We went to have a look at where the bomb had landed a few days later and saw a big crater in the middle of the field. We thought the bomb had been intended for Stanton Ironworks or maybe 'the dump' which was an army barracks in West Hallam. It was an extension to Chilwell barracks. I dont remember there being any other bombs in the immediate area during the war.
I went to Scargill School in West Hallam and if the warning siren was sounded we all used to immediately go into the cellar of the ruins of West Hallam Hall. We would sit there and sing until the all clear was sounded. We had our gas masks with us in the shelter.
