I was nine during the war and we didn't think it was that unusual - it was nothing out of the ordinary. We were visiting friends who were living on school premises that had been adapted for the homeless.

The playgrounds had trees planted with earth and piles of sand around them. We were so delighted to play in the sand. What we didn't realise was that there were bombs under the sand. When we noticed the incenduries we knew they were bombs (cylindrical and 18 inches wide) so we thought we had better not play there anymore!!
