My grandfather fought during WW2 as a private in Regio Esercito, the Italian Army. After the capitulation in 1943, all units were disbanded, leaving the soldiers without guidance or a duty to follow. Many were captured by Germans and sent to prisoner camps abroad; some joined the R.S.I., continuing their war on Mussolini's side, or else they formed new Liberation units; others took off their uniforms and tried to return to civilian life.

Mussolini sent some divisions, including my grandfather's division, to fight in the German offensive against the Soviet Union. After the fall of the defensive line, my grandfather had to return home by foot. He told me that for a few days he was in a complete state of shock and walked without reason on streets and through woods until he was discovered by a German unit retreating toward the Austrian border. After a quick interrogation, the Germans told him to escape, to run from their sight across an open field! My grandfather told me: "I was sure that just after I turned my back to them, after a few steps, they would shoot to kill me!"

He closed his eyes and ran as fast as he could. The soldiers laughed... but no one opened fire, and it wasn't until he reached a wood that he realized he was still among the living! After a long walk he heard a murmur and noticed a hungry German soldier asking for food and shelter; he was obviously lost. Remembering that the Germans hadn't opened fire, my Grandpa gave him a piece of bread, which he had kept in his pocket. The hungry soldier was very grateful.

Message 1 - Great story

Posted on: 30 September 2003 by Simon B

Hi SimonITALY,

What a fascinating little story. It's incredible how some people were just left to find their own way home. You can imagine thousands of people roaming across Europe trying to figure out how to get home and how to return to normal life.

I really enjoyed reading it!

Simon

Thanks for your story I really enjoyed reading it.

For myself, I recently visited my uncles grave for the 1st time. He was in RAF Bombers and was shot down over Kassel in 1943. Ironically, his father's (my Grandfather) family was German, from Dresden. Unfortunately by the end of the War no-one except for my mother, then only 11 years was left, so my Uncle became a photo and that was about it. Then 61 years later, a night on the internet, I found him, buried in Hannover War Cementry, only 2 hours from where I work !,here in Germany. It is a beautiful place, lovely to visit, and I will take my Mother, now an old lady, to visit later in the year.

Whilst living in Hounslow in the 1990's, I got to know a Pensioner and former Window Cleaner, living opposite me. His Mother had been German and during the 1st War she had had to report to the Police Station daily. During the Second War he was part of the Essex Regiment which was in the operation to get to Arnheim. (the Bridge to Far Story). He had tales similar to yours to tell.

For me it is good that he, like you and me had family that by the accidents of war were on different sides and it is good to hear tales that perhaps are not too often heard, but should be. It brings history to life.

Thanks for sharing your tale
