I was born in Plymouth in March 1938 and was a small child during the blitz on the city. I can recall seeing large tanker like vehicles moving up our street, usually in the late afternoon.

I understand that they were used to provide a cloud of oily smoke over the city to act as a shield to protect Devonport Dockyard from airbourne attack. This layer of smoke was, in fact, released over the city rather than the dockyard to fool the german pilots into thinking that it was to protect the docks.

Maybe this is why the residential areas received so much devastation and the dockyard only had one direct hit

Message 1 - Devonport "devastated"

Posted on: 07 November 2003 by L Jackson

Hello Michael

This story is interesting, but I am unable to confirm it. Why would the UK only protect Plymouth? Wouldn't the oil from Persia or the USA be too valuable to burn as an anti-aircraft defence?. Also, according to:
About links

Devonport was not very well protected.

"April 21st 1941 saw another devastating 'inferno' raid on Plymouth, in which Devonport was also devastated. It was during this night that the air raid shelter at Portland Square, Plymouth, received a direct hit, killing 72 people and wiping out whole families."

I hope this is of interest, L Jackson.

My name is Charles Harwood. During the time you mention I was posted from to London to Devonport. I was based at Fore Street Devonport. I was on duty for 3 days and nights. I remember the devastation to this day
