I was a student nurse at Sefton General Hospital, Smithdown Rd, Liverpool, during the May Blitz of 1941.
During the worst of the bombing, the wail of the sirens and the droning of the German bombers became a regular part of daily life. One night however stands out and is etched in my memory to this day. While on duty in the Casualty Department, we heard the release of a bomb and suddenly the hospital window shattered and my nurse鈥檚 cap blew off.
Civilian casualties soon started to arrive - some with dreadful injuries . I remember two little boys in their pyjamas, as if asleep, but both were dead.
On finishing my shift next morning, when I left the hospital to return to the nurses home, I was greeted with the sight of a whole row of terraced houses opposite the hospital. They had been people鈥檚 homes when I went on duty, but now they were completely destroyed. I never found my cap.
