Jim served as a flight engineer in 15 (XV) Squadron, Bomber Command. 15 Squadron was formed in 1915, its badge based on a device previously used and depicting a Hind (female deer). This is related to the fact that in 1936 the Squadron was equipped with Hind and Hart aircraft. In 1918 one of its RE8鈥檚 performed the remarkable feat of shooting down three out of four German attackers. Early in World War II it flew Battles and Blenheims, and in 1941 re-equipped with Sterlings. Towards the end of the war, it flew Lancasters as a heavy bomber squadron and dropped 17,250 tons of bombs and 1,600 mines. The Lancasters were later replaced with Canberras. Jim - service number 1851113 - was posted to 15 Squadron only one month before he was killed along with the other members of his crew on Monday, May 8th 1944, aged 19.

My father started to fly Lancasters with 15 Sqn at Mildenhall just after Jim was lost. He did flying training in Canada,Heavey conversion on Wellingtons and operational conversion on Stirlings on which he and the crew survived a crash on take off. He completed his 30 missions end Decemebr 1944. He started as the rear aircraft with his all Aussie crew (he was the only englishman) and finished the lead bomber. He was bomb aimer/second pilot and did a lot of the flying on the return from missions. He now aged 82, great company and has recently returned to Mildenhall to visit the base now in USAF hands which he thouroughly enjoyed.
Aim Sure
