My father was a vicar who died in 1989 so I spent my childhood living in vicarages. During the period 1940 - 1943 I lived in a vicarage in a village named Collinbourne Kingston between Marlborough and Andover, Wiltshire.

I remember evacuees, who must have come from the London area. Two girls one who was named Brenda Ducket who was older than me had a beautiful voice and used to sing in the church choir.

At Christmas 1940 my parents invited 6 American airman and 6 WAAFs to stay with us. I remember one of the airman falling for one of the WAAFs whos name was Pauline, I was eight at the time and played gooseberry. We were playing sardines and I obviously got in the way.

By 1944 we had moved and were and living in Figheldean which was on Salisbury Plain. Just before D day 1944 we used to stand at my bedroom window and watch the paratroopers practising for D day. They dropped lots of different coloured parachutes carrying food and other supplies. It seemed to go on for weeks.
