I ran a shop in Bramford and there was great hardship in terms of shortages.
We had to count all the coupons of course - you couldn't buy anything
without them. Even so, you were only allowed a little amount like two ounces
of butter a week. I started work in June 1939, just three months before the
war began. We used to listen to the air raid siren going off and get down to
the cellar but after a time we didn't hear it anymore if we were asleep.

I remember the time a man was killed here in Bramford. He was working down
at the garage and a bomb hit a wall, which fell over on top of him. Another
time a German plane crashed in nearby Sproughton. The parson there spoke
German.

Message 1 - Bramford at War

Dear Joyce
I read your account of ww2 in Bramford as up to 1939 I lived there with my family in the Station House, my father. Arther Barnes, being the station master The man you mentioned who was killed in1943 at his garage was the owner MR Frank Smith who was a geat friend of ours. It was so ironic to be him ,because he had been all through the hell of WW1as a soldier without a scatch. He was a hero to us boys[ Bertie Catchpole and myself] and used to take us out in his Hillman Minx car You may remember my oldest sister Jean, who must have gone to the same School as you and would have started work at about the same time She was also in the Girl Guides.
Regards
Dennis Barnes
