I ran a shop in Bramford and there was great hardship in terms of shortages.
We had to count all the coupons of course - you couldn't buy anything
without them. Even so, you were only allowed a little amount like two ounces
of butter a week. I started work in June 1939, just three months before the
war began. We used to listen to the air raid siren going off and get down to
the cellar but after a time we didn't hear it anymore if we were asleep.
I remember the time a man was killed here in Bramford. He was working down
at the garage and a bomb hit a wall, which fell over on top of him. Another
time a German plane crashed in nearby Sproughton. The parson there spoke
German.
