Prior to landing we had been issued with a ship's biscuit 4in square, which in later years at home were being sold as dog biscuits. There was a very large warship in the harbour dressed overall and lined with naval ratings. Upon landing, it was quite obvious that the Italian people sympathised with us and were seen to be weeping here and there. Next we were on our way by train to POW Camp 66 at Capua and en route there, we saw fields of plum-shaped tomatoes and lettuce. Mistakenly thought that at least we might be having plenty of salads, but not so. From the Camp we had a magnificent view of Mount Vesuvius, (4,190 feet)
which belched white smoke by day and red fire by night. On one side of this camp was a training ground for the Axis forces, where troop carriers used to climb up and over steep mounds of earth, then further over and quite high, was a very large building which appeared like a monastery. Goodness only knows what was going on within it.
