I remember how my mother always laid out our clothes each night on the chair. It was always underwear first followed by outer clothes, this was so we could get dressed in a hurry if there was an emergency. One night the Home Guard came and said we had to get out of the house fast as there was an incendiary bomb in the garden of our terraace. We lived at 8 Beacon Terrace. I was half asleep and don't know if it was a real emergency or if it was just a rehearsal.
