Lots of items and things of interest passed between people during the war years. My husband has some pictures he acquired - two photographs someone had taken of Mussolini and his girlfriend and hinchman hanging up on meathooks! The pictures were terrible!
My father asked me, after my brother went in the Forces, what was I going to do. I replied "I'm working in the Tax Department which gets the money in to pay the wages" He said "Don't be so bloody cheeky, I'll find you something to do" So, after work each day I had to go to Hull Royal Infirmary to make up beds just in case there was another air raid, Hull having been bombed quite frequently. I did this from 1939 to 1942. You didn't argue with my father!

The statement - "Mussolini and his girl friend hanging on meathooks" tends to give a completely false impression to younger readers as it conjures up a picture of someone hanging from an actual meathook like a side of beef.
This is not the case as both Benito Mussolini and his girl friend Clara Petacchi were hung by the neck in the prescribed manner by the partisans - THEN - turned upside down to hang by the cord tied to their respective ankles at a garage in Milan !I doubt that there were many meathooks in that garage.
One thing which was unfortunate, was the fact that Miss Petacchi wore a skirt which fell about her face thus exposing her underwear for all to see ! The woman was dead and had no respect shown her corpse.This photograph had a wide circulation in Italy at the time and did not cause the stir which could be caused by the words used in this posting !The main thought as I recall at the time was - the Dictator is dead - Deo Gratias !
