In October 1939 called up and reported to Britannia Barracks, Norwich (Royal Norfolk Regiment). After a few months initial training went to O.C.T.U. at Aldershot and then joined Bedfordshire & Herts regiment at Kempston Barracks, Bedford. Then served in Yorkshire, Cornwall, Northern Ireland and then in 1944 was sent to Normandy (1 week after D Day) but climbed down scrambling net to landing craft and landed at Arromanches. Was with No 9 Beach Group which then disbanded and I joined the Somerset Light Infantry in the front line. I was then wounded and brought back to the UK by Air and then taken to Loughborough Hospital. After a time sent on sick leave and later to Bury St Edmunds which was then an infantry training centre (combined Suffolk Regiment and Bedfordshire regiment). Later I was sent to Moreton-in-the-Marsh where we were looking after German prisoners of war. I was demobbed in April 1946 atfer a total of over 6 years service.
