I was about 8 yars of age and living with my Mum, Peggy Brooks, my sisters, Pat and Margaret in our house in Coventry. We were hit badly by the bombs in Coventry and had an Anderson Shelter in the back garden. This shelter had a sack over the entrance and many a night we would all have to get out of bed and stay in the shelter until the all clear sounded. One night there was a terrible noise very close by, I looked out through the sacking and only 15 yards away saw our house collapse along with 3 or 4 others alongside it. I was very frightened but then got a good hiding from my Mum for looking out through the sacking which was forbidden.
The next day we looked through the debris and all we found was a photograph of my Dad who was in the Royal Warwick paras amd a What Not which she put in my sister's pram and pushed it to our new home. We had to keep moving because of the bombing, but I never looked out from behind the sacking again, fearing another hiding from my Mum.
