This article has been written by Joseph Ritson, a volunteer story-gatherer on behalf of the Radio Cumbria CSV Action Desk at the Whitehaven Maritime Festival held on 25 鈥 26 June 2005. The Festival incorporated the official county of Cumbria 鈥榁ictory Parade鈥 commemorating the end of World War Two. It is submitted with the permission of Mr Gordon Hunter and Mr Alan Aitkenhead, two veterans of World War The author fully understands the terms of the 大象传媒 鈥淧eople鈥檚 War鈥 website.
During World War Two, Gordon and Alan took part in the Normandy Landings in June 1944. Both of them are members of the West Cumbria Branch of the Normandy Veterans Association. On Sunday morning 26 June 2005, Gordon and Alan marched in the 鈥榁ictory Parade鈥 with fellow Normandy Veterans and other World War Two veterans at Whitehaven from St Nicholas鈥 Church, Lowther Street, Whitehaven to the harbour side where there was a short ceremony of Remembrance and Thanksgiving.
After the 鈥榁ictory Parade鈥 and light lunch organised by the Royal British Legion, Gordon and Alan enjoyed many of the other activities held in hour of Final Victory in 1945. I briefly spoke to Gordon and Alan just after watching an air display by an RAF 鈥楬urricane鈥 over the harbour. They both said it had been a tremendous day and they were honoured to have taken part in the events.
In June 2004, they visited Normandy and took part in the official 60th Anniversary Commemorations of the Normandy Landings. This included a ceremony at Bayeux where they were among the Veterans who presented a plaque from the townsfolk of Workington to the townsfolk of Bayeux.
