We were based in Kabrit, Suez.
One morning roll call came and we fell on the decks at 3 or 4 in the morning. The Germans had invaded Crete and the Commonwealth forces were being overwhelmed.
We were on the Glengyle which was a Merchantman that had been converted into a landing ship. We did not know where we were going and were then told we would be going to Greece.
I did not even have a tin hat and hardly any equipment. We were left there and after 7 days our ship never came back.
We were the beach party and were told to treat all combatants as equal.
One officer came and tried to take extra ammo and I told him he could only have what we had.
By this time all of the rescue ships came and we organised the escape of all the troops on that beach, by now there were thousands of troops trying to escape.
The boats were all types.
I was eventually one of the last 60 people to get off the beach.
