I lived with my grandparents in a small hamlet called North Street, 5 miles from Reading, my parents still in India attached to the 14 Army. Each day I walked to Theale to catch a bus to Reading and then Walked to the Abbey School. One evening the bus was attacked by a stray German fighter, flying over Reading. All the children were taken off the bus, whilst awaiting a relief (I now know the bus was damaged) for some reason which I will never know, I started to walk the 5 miles home (I was 9 years old). After a mile or so the new bus came along, and again I didn鈥檛 know how but the driver recognised me and stopped, and I travelled the rest of the way home on the bus. There were no means of telling my grandmother that I would be late, and when I got home eventually she was angry!!
