I remember the rationing during the war, the eggs were rationed, tea and sugar — everything was rationed. I was lucky though as I lived on a farm when I was young, so I learnt how to grow things and how to be a good cook. I was a good cook; good at making something out of nothing. You think of anything and I could cook it.
I used to go shopping for food at the markets while the war was on. There was quite a good choice considering the times we were in.
I was good at sewing as well. I made little girls’ clothes and boys trousers for the neighbours children. I made them out of old trousers. With shoes we just had to make do and mend.
