My father moved to Luton from Manchester in the mid-1930's and although a dyer by trade worked in the local armaments factory during the war.
I was born in 1939 and because Luton was deemed a safe place we lived there throughout the war. My mother ran a small toy shop which was next door to a post office.
One day, my father had gone to work and my mother and I were in the shop when the air raid siren sounded. We heard some bombs, maybe 2 or 3 and the windows in our shop were rattling. I remember my mother being very frightened which, in turn, made me feel frightened too. She grabbed my hand and we ran next door to the Post Office where we could shelter. As we were out in the street I saw a convoy of open trucks driving past. They were all full of people, many with blood-stained bandages around their heads and limbs. It was like a scene from a film as truck after truck drove past us.
Because we were moving so quickly I lost my slipper in the street. My mother suggested we go back out to retrieve it but once we were in the relative saftey of the post office I was far too scared to go back outside!
It turned out that the bomb that fell was a V2 and it landed on the Commer Cars factory a little way away from where we were.
