I'm from Edinburgh and was stationed in Weymouth durng the war. US soldiers left from their for the D-Day landings in 1944. We struck up friendships with them. At the dances they were great - terrific dancers, and we got to know a few of them by name. They were from the 1st Division of the American Infantry.
Then they were all shipped off and I remember them marching off to ships along the promenade in Weymouth. You couldn't recognise them at all, but I do remember a voice shouting "Hey, Scottie!" I always think that was someone from the group we danced with Where is he now, where are they now, did they survive?
One I knew in particular was: Jake Picardy, from Boston, Mass.
