I was in the Air Force and sent to Station X. this turned out to be Bletchley Park. I was a clerk attached to teleprinters, everything was in code. We did shift work 8 am to 5 pm or 5 pm to midnight or midnight to 8 am.
We lived in billets at first, and then we lived at Rush Greens a hut specially built for us. Mostly women and civil servants worked there. I was there for four years — until the end of the war. Very few men except civil servants were on our station. We had to be in by 10 pm, so we cut a hole in the barbed wire and crept out at night to a dance, hoping we wouldn’t be caught.
One night we nearly got caught. The Duty Officer came to check on us and we quickly jumped into bed fully clothed and covered ourselves with blankets.
I’m glad I went; it was an experience.
