I鈥檝e just been having a natter to my Gran, Joyce Mersh about her days in WW2. Joyce once worked making lockers for flying crew and tables for the mess. This all took place in Yatten Somerset at a company called Wake(n) Deans. She worked with her brother John and a good friend called Mary Orme who was from Dagenham.
To keep spirits up they used to write messages inside the lockers for the service men to read. One day when they were doing this Mary was inside a locker writing the message and Joyce and John decided to play a practical joke by locking Mary in. The cart picked up the locker and Mary was heard banging the door of the locker as it went down to the station. John tipped the driver that she was inside and she was let out before the locker was loaded on the train.
Mary Orme鈥檚 husband was a 鈥渞ed beret鈥, posted to the desert. Joyce is unclear on this but would be interested in hearing from anyone who remembers her or Mary Orme and her husband. Does anyone remember messages in their lockers?
My Gran did not spend all the war in Somerset. Joyce was found to be a good typist and so was sent to Sailsbury to Porton Down. At Porton Down she typed the scientific papers for the scientists.
