My training as a General Armourer was completed on the 1st.September 1939.
My first Operational Unit was 613 Sqn at RAF Odiham.This was followed with a posting to the foreward Fighter base at Hawkinge near Folkstone where I spent the entire Battle of Britain.My next post in October 1940 was to the HQ Armoury at RAF Gravesend. May 1942 found me at RAF West Malling Night Fighter station under the command of W/Cdr Peter Townsend. June 1943, Posted to 341 Free French Sqdn at Biggin Hill commanded by Cpt. Rene Mouchotte. This was followed with a transfer to the RAF Bomb Disposal School At Doncaster.
After completing the course I was posted to 6223 Flt BD situated in the Hermitage Manor at West Malling in Kent. 6223 Flt moved through France, Belgium, Holland and finally Germany.
Disposal of German Airforce Weapons was the responsibility of RAF BD Units.
During the clearance of munitions at Welscap, near Eindhoven, Holland, I was involved in an explosion which killed three of my Pals.
When a HMSO Publication entitled "The Disolution of the Luftwaffe" was compiled it included a RAF BD Roll of Honour which listed me as killed, along with the other three, on the 29th October 1945.
